Conceived as a forum for training students and teachers in the field of Medicinal Chemistry, the Summer School on Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry (EVQFM) has been contributing since 1995, the year of its 1st edition, to the qualification of professionals in the pharmaceutical sector.
During the XXV EVQFM, in January 2019, the school completed 25 years of this event organized annually and uninterruptedly, in a commemorative character, and we paid tribute to its creator and until then General Coordinator, Professor Eliezer Barreiro, baptizing the Summer School on Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry formally with its name, to perpetuate its unique contribution to the training of Medicinal Chemists in Brazil.
Its creator, Professor Eliezer J. Barreiro is undoubtedly a visionary in the area of Health Sciences in our country. In particular, in the context of valuing Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry, a discipline he embraced since his return from his Doctorate at Chimie Médicale in France in 1978, he has contributed to spreading its importance as an essential tool for our sovereignty in the area of drugs and medicines, through tireless efforts in different corners of this continental country, impregnating students with the idea of building the foundations for having "green-yellow drugs who know how to speak portuguese"...
But above all Professor Eliezer Barreiro is a great scientist and very careful with the social responsibility of his research. He is a Full Professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and creator and scientific coordinator of the Laboratory for the Evaluation and Synthesis of Bioactive Substances (LASSBio). A member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, he received a large number of important honors in his academic career, such as the Commendation of the Great Cross of the National Order of Scientific Merit, awarded by the Presidency of the Republic of Brazil. He has supervised more than a hundred graduate students and contributed with more than 350 scientific papers in indexed international journals, in addition to having more than 20 patents in the field of drugs, deposited as an inventor. He is co-author of the book Química Medicinal: As Bases Moleculares da Ação dos Fármacos, which is in its 3rd edition. He is the Scientific Coordinator of the National Institute of Science and Technology of Drugs and Medicines (INCT-INOFAR), an important network for radical innovation in the field of pharmaceuticals in our country. In this context, from January 23 to 27, 2023, we will be holding the twenty-ninth edition of the Summer School on Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry Professor Eliezer Barreiro (XXIX EVQFM-EB), offering simultaneous mini-courses and conferences, covering the main themes related to Medicinal Chemistry and its application in the drug candidate discovery process.
